MUSIC super star, Dapo Daniel Oyebanjo, better known as D’Banj, is angry
with popular British newspaper, the UK Daily Mail. He is pissed off by
their recent publication that claimed he is a fake African prince and a
legendary womanizer.
In an exclusive interview with ENCOMIUM Weekly at Swiss International Hotels, Port Harcourt, Rivers state, D’Banj rubbished the report of the newspaper of records, insisting they goofed. He also said he is discussing the issue with his legal team with a view to suing Daily Mail for maligning him.
The British newspaper had in a publication entitled, “Kenya Moore’s fake ‘African Prince’ boyfriend, a ‘rented’ Bentley and massive money woes: Real Housewives of Atlanta star, Kenya Moore stretches reality TV to the limits” alleged that her ‘most likely candidate is multi-millionaire Nigerian singer, D’Banj, who is claimed to have been offered $40,000 to fake a relationship with her.
The UK Mail Online in the same story reported by Will Payne in Atlanta, Georgia, on March 13, 2014, also insinuated that D’Banj (who allegedly hosted Kenya Moore, former Miss USA, star actress, model and producer in Lagos last Valentine) is called Koko master on account of the many women in his life.
But for the first time, the co-founder of the now rested Mo’Hits has formally reacted to the story, threatening to take legal action against UK Daily Mail.
Relatedly, D’Banj has attributed his huge success in the music industry in the last decade to God. According to Koko master, identifying one’s talent and strength early is key. He also confessed that stardom has been good and bad for him.
And more than excited by his juicy endorsement deal with telecom giants, Globacom, the Oliver Twist creator said he has been twice lucky being one of the first set of artistes to be endorsed by Glo.
He told ENCOMIUM Weekly it was good news to return to the world class brand. Asked to tell us his regrets in respect of Mo’Hits, the rich and famous singer said they could have split in a more amicable way.
Dapo Oyebanjo also explained why he is not yet married…
When are you getting married?
I’m going to marry at the right time. Trust me. You guys are asking me when I’m getting married because 2Face has married. Peter (P-Square) is married. Even Paul has also married. At God’s appointed time, I will marry just as my friends are now getting married.
Have you found love?
Yes, I have found love.
Who is the lucky girl?
I won’t tell you (laughs).
What was the attraction?
I won’t tell you anything about my private life until I marry (laughs).
You’ve been around for about a decade in the music industry and you have this energy that gives you an edge over your peers, how do you do it?
It is God that gives you this kind of talent and all that come with it. The earlier you realized that the better for you. And to whom much is given, much is also expected. So, I see myself as a super hero. Even when you are really tired on stage, you can’t afford to be tired. That is where the energy on stage comes from.
What has stardom cost you?
A lot, a lot. My privacy is gone to the winds. People reason as if you are not human. What this means is that you are constantly expected to act in ways the public must approve. You don’t have a bad day.
What about the sweetest part of your job?
The love and acceptance, generally is worth it. You get into a place and everybody knows its D’Banj. Hence, your name has been branded to open doors for you.
There is this allegation by UK Daily Mail that you are a serial womanizer. The tabloid of records also claimed you are romancing US actress and model, Kenya Moore. What is the true story?
It is a rumour. The story has no substance. I’m even about to sue UK Daily Mail for defamation of character. I’m discussing with my legal team. They didn’t hear from me. Everything they wrote is totally wrong. They defined Koko master wrongly. I think they wanted to talk about Kenya Moore, who was a former Miss America, but they didn’t get their facts right. Everything they wrote was false. They are going to hear from my legal team, soon!
With hits after hits in just a decade in a career laced with multiple awards, what is more for D’Banj to prove?
That I have gone into agriculture (laughs). Doing agriculture for me is a way to encourage our youths. I’m not only about entertainment. Now, I’m into agriculture, I just started the Koko Garri. I intend to launch other agro based products like Koko Bread made from cassava flour. The Koko band is expanding.
How does it feel to return to Glo again?
I was the first Nigerian artiste to be signed to Glo and being signed again is just a privilege. I love the brand and we are going to continue to work together. I must also thank the chairman of Globacom, Dr. Mike Adenuga Jnr., GCON for his love for the Nigerian entertainment industry. I’m really excited. I think I’m glowing (laughs).
And how does it feel to meet your boy, Wande Coal there?
Oh, it’s beautiful. We were together in South Africa. You never know maybe Glo will get us to do a song together (laughs).
Finally, can you share with us your Mo’Hits regrets?
No regret, because for me personally life is dynamic. Change is the only constant thing in life. The only regret I might have is that there would have been a better way for us to split. But it happened and it happened. And to God be the glory. It was as if God was already about to separate me. Like five months after that I got juicy promotional deals and now the Glo endorsement.
The story is that your deal with Kanye West has crumbled?
Kanye is now married…the truth about it is that we are operating from different territories. How things work here is different from what is obtainable in the States. They cannot control what I do here because na here I don dey since. It has always been a mutual partnership.
