The Director General of the NYSC, Brig-Gen. Johnson Olawumi, has today, unveiled to the newly improved National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificates to be issued to corps members at the conclusion of the mandatory one year service to their fatherland. 

 

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony in Abuja, the DG, represented by the Acting Director of Certification, Alhaji Aliu Daura, said the scheme took the step to wage war against forgery and impersonation.

Ahead of the Tuesday screeniing, President Buhari on Monday, October 12, submitted the second list of ministerial nominees to the Senate President Bukola Saraki.

 

According to ThisDay sources, the names of ministerial nominees likely to have made the new list include Dr. Okechukwu Enyinna Enelamah (Abia State), Mr. James Ocholi (Kogi State), Professor Isaac Adewole (Osun State), Professor Claudis Omoleye Daramola (Ondo State), Hon. Khadija Bukar Abba Ibrahim (Yobe State), and Alhaji Adamu Adamu.

 

Others on the list are Professor Anthony Anwuka (Imo State), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri (Bayelsa State), Brig.-Gen. Dan Ali (rtd), and Hajia Aisha Abubakar.

 

Saraki’s spokesperson, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu, who confirmed the submission said the names were submitted by the president’s Chief of Staff, Alhaji Abba Kyari, Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, and his counterpart in the House of Representatives, Hon. Abdulrahman Kawu, at about 1.30 pm monday.

In a state-wide broadcast on Tuesday morning, Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson  has said that the first civilian governor of the state, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, who died last Saturday at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, died because he was harassed and forced to abandon his medical care abroad.

 

The Governor Dickson condemned what he described as the propaganda and orchestrated harassment that led to the untimely death of the Governor-General, and called on the people of the state and Ijaw nation to maintain the peace, as they mourn their departed leader whom he described as a man of peace.

 

"To us as a people at this trying time, this sad incident should serve to unite us and to rededicate ourselves to the ideals that he stood for.

"We acknowledge the anger, disappointment and the sense of outrage felt by our people at home and in the diaspora, well-meaning Nigerians and others around the world for the way and manner he was harassed and forced to abandon his treatment abroad.

The Nigerian presidency has confirmed the arrest of a former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, in London, over allegations of corruption and money laundering.

“The government is aware of the arrest and all the government investigative agencies are working very closely with the British law enforcement,” the Senior Special Assistant to the President, Garba Shehu, told Premium Times exclusively on Sunday.

“Nigerian authorities are saying for the first time that matters are being handled with seriousness and deep commitment. Nobody wants to give the impression that this government is frivolous and unserious.

“For this reason, government is only confirming active collaboration. Beyond this, we are not saying more. In due course, Nigerians will be briefed on updates as appropriate,” Shehu added.

Subsidy on Petrol Falls to N576m Daily

Since the conscious effort of the Buhari administration to restructure the petroleum sector, there has been a continuous decline in the amount of money the government spends on subsidy of oil products.

 

From a high of N51.61 per litre on June 11, 2015, subsidy on every litre of Premium Motor Spirit consumed in the country has dropped to N14.39, data obtained from the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency on Sunday showed.

The dip in the subsidy payable by the Federal Government is partly due to the sustained decline in global crude oil prices, which have continued to trade below the $50 per barrel mark in recent weeks.

The global benchmark Brent crude, which fell below $50 per barrel in January, rebounded to $65 in June, pushing up the subsidy on petrol. However, Brent traded around $48 per barrel on Sunday.

Subsidy refers to the money paid, usually by the government, to keep prices below what they will otherwise be in a free market system.

The PPPRA, in its latest pricing template released on Friday, October 2, 2015, stated that the landing cost and Expected Open Market Price (total cost) of petrol were N85.90 and N101.39 per litre, respectively.

This is against a regulated retail price of N87 per litre. The difference between the EOMP and the retail price is, therefore, N14.39.

Buhari must be screened if he's Petroleum Minister - Senate

The Senate's plenary session will hold tomorrow, where president Buhari's ministerial list will finally be unveiled. And according to Vanguard,

The Senators are saying the President must, in line with the constitution, submit himself before the Upper Chamber for screening if he appointed himself Minister of Petroleum. 

They are also set to reject an incomplete list, saying the constitution provides for a nominee from each state of the federation and that any list that did not cover the 36 states would suffer serious opposition on the floor of the Senate.
