Ikorodu residents cry out over abandoned Lagbuses

Residents of Ikorodu in Lagos State, western Nigeria have called upon the state government, through its Ministry of Transportation headed by Mr. Kayode opeifa, to help them find a solution to the abandoned Lagbuses in their area.

Investigation revealed that no fewer that thirty buses belonging to the Lagos State ministry of transport have been abandoned on the beach road in Ikorodu.

Residents in the area say the piece of land on which the buses are currently abandoned was being used as a park for the 'red' buses before they were left there to rot for almost a year now.

Most of the buses are without tyres and do not look repairable.

A transport worker plying the Owode/Ibeshe route, who wants to be called Anthony, said: "that big place you are seeing now once used to be a park where all these red buses were being repaired.

" But sudden, we noticed the buses have been abandoned there.

"We do not know why Lagos State is not fixing these buses when most of the Lagbuses on the road are old."

Another resident, who sells meat at the slaughter slab opposite the park, explained that the park used to contain more buses.

The young man, who refused to mention his name, also confirmed that the buses have been left there for more than a year, saying the reason is best known to the operators.

According to him: "they used to park many of their buses here so that it would be easier for them to commute passengers to and from their destinations in the morning.

"But what we discover is that for close to a year now, the buses have been left there without anything being done.

"Apart from the fact that it is tax payers' funds that were used to purchase these buses, their presence here is causing serious security challenge to us. When we pass here at night, we would see some unknown people sitting inside the buses doing only God knows.

"We want the government to come and fix them or move them away from here before miscreants start using this place as hideout."

An attempt to get a reaction from the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation on the matter was unsuccessful as officials in their office at the Alausa -Secretariat say the commissioner cannot talk on the issue.
