Boko Haram Now Ready To Swap Chibok Girls For Their Men

The dreaded Boko Haram insurgents have offered to free the more than 200 young girls kidnapped from their boarding school in the town of Chibok, Borno State, in exchange for the release of its fighters held by the Nigerian military, a human rights activist has told The Associated Press (AP).

The activist said Boko Haram’s current offer is limited to the girls from the school in northeastern Nigeria whose mass abduction in April 2014 ignited worldwide outrage and a campaign to “Bring Back Our Girls” that stretched to the White House, US, and other capitals across the world.

The new initiative reopens an offer made last year to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan to release the students in exchange for 16 Boko Haram detainees, the activist said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters on this sensitive issue.

Fred Eno, an apolitical Nigerian who has been negotiating with Boko Haram for some time, told the AP that “another window of opportunity opened” in the last few days, though he could not discuss details.

Buhari's Bailout to States: Governors Stop Wasteful Spending

Workers from across Nigeria have welcomed the news of the approval by President Muhammadu Buhari of a special bailout package for the three tiers of government to settle outstanding salary obligations.

Workers and other analysts have warned government officials, especially state governors, against spending the money on frivolous things instead of paying civil servants and public service employees.

Presidency sources had disclosed on Monday that Buhari had approved a comprehensive relief package worth N713.7bn to pay federal workers and bail out cash-strapped states, many of which had been unable to pay their employees.

The package includes the sharing of
$1.6bn dividend and $500m tax by the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas. Besides, the Central Bank of Nigeria is to set up a special intervention fund that will offer between N250bn and N300bn as a soft loan to the states to enable them pay the backlog of salaries.

Ex-Governor Lamido & His Sons Rearrested by EFCC

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday in Dutse, Jigawa State capital, rearrested the immediate past governor of the state, Sule Lamido, and his two sons, Aminu and Mustapha, over alleged N1.3 billion fraud while he was in government.

The father and his sons were immediately whisked to Kano where they will appear in court today.

The former governor was spotted wearing a light blue kaftan while one of his sons was on trouser and Tee shirt at the time of arrest, sources say he and his sons were caught unawares.

Recall that in November 2013, Aminu and his brother, Mustapha, were arrested in Kano and flown to Abuja over same allegation. The former governor still enjoyed immunity as at the time his sons were quizzed by the commission, he submitted himself to the EFCC last month after he left office.
They are being accused of using their positions to siphon Jigawa State’s funds.

Why I shielded my fiancee from Tunisian gunman-Hero dad shot 3 times

The heroic man who shielded his fiancee and told her to run during the Tunisian massacre has spoken for the first time..Matthew James, whose courage made headlines around the world, tells how he was initially convinced he was going to die after being hit by three bullets as he flung himself around Saera Wilson to protect her.
When the shots were fired at the German couple it simply didn’t register with Saera,’ said Matthew. ‘At least not for a few seconds. She said later she thought it was a joke, some kind of game. But I just kind of acted instinctively, and pulled her out
of the way.’
He flung himself in front of her and ‘twisted her around and pulled her down to the ground’ just as Rezgui unleashed his second burst of fire. One bullet sliced open his lower stomach; another lodged in his chest, just above his heart; a third went clean through his upper left arm. Saera lay in the sand, terrified but unscathed.

Buhari fires his Chief Security Officer over supremacy battle with ADC

President Muhammadu Buhari has fired his Chief Security Officer, Mr. Abdulrahman Mani(above), for engaging in a supremacy battle with the Aide-de-Camp to the President, Lt.-Col. Lawal Abubakar.
Our correspondent learnt on Saturday that his redeployment was one of the sweeping changes being carried out by the acting Director-General of the Department of State Service, Mr. Lawan Daura, on the order of the President.
Buhari had appointed Daura to replace Mr. Ita Ekpeyong during the week at the peak of the crisis between the DSS and the military especially as it concerns the President’s protection.

It would be recalled that Abubakar had earlier issued a memo redeploying DSS officials from 10 beats that they had hitherto been manning inside the Presidential Villa.

He had explained that the decision to strip the DSS officials of their traditional roles was part of efforts to enhance general security within the villa.

Dangote Warns: We May End Up Buying One Dollar with N500

Media men had a piece of Aliko Dangote last weekend. And when they were done many appreciated why he is one of the richest in the world. In an interactive session with senior editors Dangote discussed state of the nation while explaining some details in his businesses that are geared towards a better life for Nigerians. His tremendous knowledge in many areas awed the audience.

His take on Oil subsidy
The issue with subsidy is that government needs to block all loopholes. If there’s no subsidy, it will affect our foreign exchange, we’ll end up buying a dollar at N500, because there’s no VAT on petroleum products. That’s why the import of petroleum products is taking about 30% of our foreign reserve. We just need to make sure that there’s no siphoning of money. The refining business requires volume. If you don’t have a massive volume, there’s no way you’ll make money. Most of the refineries in Africa are running at a big loss. It’s not possible for government officials to successfully manage oil businesses. It’s good enough if they remove the subsidy, but you can check with neighbouring countries like Senegal. If a poor person in Senegal can afford to pay subsidy, why can’t a poor person in Nigeria afford to pay. I think there must be something for the masses, which should be in terms of power, social insurance, good education system, good roads etc.

Buhari, Obama and The Same-Sex Marriage Saga

Eniola Akinkuotu of Punch examines the implications of the United States’ Supreme Court judgment on the foreign policy outlook of President Barack Obama, with a focus on Nigeria.

In three weeks, President Muhammadu Buhari will visit his counterpart in the United States, Barack Obama, for the first time to discuss political and economic issues as well as the fight against terrorism.

Coming barely a month after the US Supreme Court legalised same-sex marriage across the country’s 50 states, coupled with Obama’s open support for gay rights, observers reason that the US President might attempt to encourage Nigeria to follow suit.

The US apex court had last month ruled that the US constitution provides same-sex couples the right to marry, handing a historic triumph to the American gay rights movement. With the landmark ruling, gay marriage became legal in all the 50 states of the US as opposed to the 37 states that permitted gay marriage earlier.

Buhari Is Favouring Only Northerners In His Appointments?

Nigerians especially those from the Southern part of the country have expressed serious concern over all the appointments that have been made so far by President Muhammadu Buhari. They said the appointments were lopsided and not in the best interest of the country.

President Buhari is from Katsina State, Senate President Bukola Saraki and House of Representatives Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, are from Kwara and Bauchi states respectively. The judiciary is led by Justice Mahmud Mohammed from Taraba State.

Of the nine appointments made so far by Buhari, eight are from the North, while one is from the South. The appointments are:
Director-General of the State Services, Lawal Daura (Katsina State); Acting Chairman of INEC, Mrs. Amina Bala Zakari, (Jigawa State); Director of DPR, Mr. Mordecai Danteni Baba Ladan; and the Accountant-General of the Federation, Alhaji Ahmed Idris, Kano State.

Others are the State Chief of Protocol, Mallam Lawal Abdullahi Kazaure; Aide De Camp, Lt.-Col. Muhammed Lawal Abubakar (Kano State); Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu; and Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina (the only South).

Marriages Are Crashing Because of Social Media - Betty Irabor

These days of the social media is an era when ladies think they know everything and the guys too are not yet in a hurry to completely loose their place and position as expected in a proper African home.

Publisher of Genevieve Magazine, Mrs. Betty Irabor, after taking a survey round to understand why several of the marriages in the 2000s are crashing, has warned married couples to be weary of information they share on social media as it is now one of the major cause of marriage failures.

Marriages experience issues but once you bring it on social media for all to know, you're killing it.

Cautioning young couples to stop posting stuffs about their challenges in marriage on any social median platform, she said: “Blame social media for most of the marriage breakup we see today. What can usually be settled in private (among the couples) is not given any chance to fix itself.”

Boko Haram: Nigeria’s Military Goes Deadly Silent Again

Since May 17th there has not been a single public report of a forward engagement by the Nigerian military. The Nigerian military under the retained leadership of Chiefs Badeh, Minimah and co has either gone silent again against Boko Haram or silent on informing us on their activities. Both silences are equally deadly as the need for action and public awareness can never be under emphasized.

Nigeria’s military under its current leadership was known for its silence throughout the Jonathan years. This led to a state of confusion and confused hopelessness of Nigerians, a lack of trust and cooperation with the locals and ultimate success for terror.
Most times the military was silent, it was not because they were not keeping Nigeria informed on their victories or losses, it has been because they were militarily silent against terror, holed up largely in their barracks’ or only stationed defending the northeast capital cities and hence had nothing to talk about.

Billionaire Politicians, Get Ready To Sell Your Private Jets

Public officers and politicians have been warned to get rid of their private jets as President Muhammadu Buhari had begun blocking financial leakages in the country’s economy.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole made this known at a public lecture titled “Labour and the Nigerian Economy: What needs to be done”, held at the University of Port Harcourt.
His words: “Few people (in Nigeria) are taking away so much wealth, while majority of the people are going home with almost nothing.
“A clear example is when you arrive at the private wing of the airport in Abuja; you will find more than 40 to 50 private jets parked there in one airport alone.
“The question is what sources do these private jet owners get their wealth from; and which businesses do they run to acquire this luxurious lifestyle?
