Update on Jega's sack: Confusion as FG remains non-commital

 

The Federal Government on Friday further compounded fears in some quarters that the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, could be sacked before the new dates of the general elections.

In an answer to enquiries on government’s stand on allegation that the INEC boss would soon be asked to proceed on a terminal leave, the Federal Government through the Minister of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation, Chief Edem Duke, gave a rather ambiguous answer.

He said the exit of Jega from the chairmanship of the INEC would take a natural course. Duke, who is also the supervising Minister of Information, spoke with journalists at the headquarters of the Ministry of Information in Abuja on Friday.

While answering a question on whether the Federal Government planned to send Jega on terminal leave before the expiration of his tenure in June, Duke said:

Presidency Plans to Send Jega on Terminal Leave Next Week

 

The secret moves to remove Professor Attahiru Jega from INEC at all cost is not over after all. The leading opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus in the Senate has raised the alarm over an alleged plot by the presidency to send the chairman of INEC on terminal leave next week.

According to the leader of the caucus, Senator George Akume, the plan is aimed at ensuring that Jega will be removed to pave way for a more pliant person to take over so that the Presidency can use him to achieve its agenda.

“We received information from very, very informed sources, very credible sources, that next week, the chairman of INEC will be served a letter by the office of the Head of Service directing him to proceed on terminal leave.

Nigeria Suffering Under Crippling Global Sanctions

 

Nigeria is being punished with global crippling sanctions thanks to its current leadership.

The far reaching military and security infrastructure sanctions which have been in effect since as early as 2012 have caused immense hardship, embarrassment and continuous death in the populous African nation of 170 million.

The current administration is being sanctioned from purchasing military and police hardware. Until the Jonathan administration recently went to shop in eastern European and Asian markets, the equipments in use in Nigeria were purchased in the prior civilian governments like the Obasanjo and Shagari governments and military administrations like the Buhari/Idiagbon and again Obasanjo administrations with the Jonathan government simply barred from buying even simple policing equipment from western markets.

2 Nigerians arrested in Dubai for stealing computers & spare parts from buses

 

Two Nigerian workers allegedly stole computers and spare parts from mini buses after breaking into them.

According to Emirates 247 SA, 26, and his compatriot IF, 30, used to travel on their motorbike from Sharjah, where they stayed, to Dubai and roam around until they see their preferred vehicle model, namely, Toyota Hiace, after which they would break the glass window, open the bus and steal its parts.

“A number of complaints were lodged by residents about such thefts. Police informers reported the involvement of SA in these crimes. After obtaining the necessary permission from prosecution, SA was arrested,” said Second Lieutenant Nasser Mohammed.

The accused admitted to committing a number of thefts with his compatriot IF in Dubai and Sharjah.

Kidnappers of American Missionary in Kogi demand N60m

Kidnappers have demanded the sum of N60m for the American missionary abducted from her workplace in Kogi State.
Rev. Phyllis Sortor was snatched by masked gunmen, who stormed the Hope Alive Nursery/Primary School, which she runs in Emiworo, Ajaokuta Local government Area of Kogi State on Monday.
According to the Nation,Commissioner of Police Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi said the five kidnappers had tabled N60 million ransom demand.

The kidnappers were “unknown gunmen…(who) came into the school premises shooting sporadically to scare away people before taking (the hostage) away into the bush”,
He added that the gunmen came through the hill at the back of the school and forcibly pulled her out from her office. The abductors scaled over the fence with her. They all disappeared through the hill.

I took advantage of the break caused by the postponement of the elections to visit a few places in the South-East and South-South zones and directly gauge the perception of the people about the current political developments in the country. The first place was my village in Mbaise, then my mother’s village, both in Imo State. After going to my state, I joined one of my close friends to pay a courtesy visit to one of the riverine villages near Yenagoa in Bayelsa State.

Interestingly, some grass-roots politicians showed up during both visits and I took the liberty of the two visits to discuss Nigerian politics with both sets of people – my kinsmen and the kinsmen of President Goodluck Jonathan. During my discussions, it was obvious that President Jonathan has more supporters in Imo and other Igbo-speaking states than even in his home state, Bayelsa. Surprised?

80% of people who advise me have nothing to say – Jonathan

 

President Goodluck Jonathan has declared that more than 80 percent of his advisers have nothing to say. He stated this in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, at a special funeral service for eight female politicians and their driver who died in a road accident on February 14.

Jonathan stated this in reaction to Governor Seriake Dickson’s disclosure that he was advised against organising a state burial for the deceased.

Jonathan said, “I was surprised when the governor said some people asked why state burial. I told the governor that more than 80% of people who come to advise you have nothing to say, but just listen to them.

“From my experience as a deputy governor till today, more than 80 per cent (of advisers) have nothing to say, but you listen to everybody and do what is right for our people”.

My Parents Knew I Was A Robber-Suspect

A suspected member of an armed robbery gang, Mutiu Rasheed, who was arrested by the Lagos State Police Command, has said his parents were aware that he was an armed robber.
Punch Metro learnt that Rasheed, along with two others ─ Ahmed Musiliu and Sodiq Dada ─ were nabbed by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad on February 5.

Our correspondent gathered that the three suspects were rounded up by the police in the Isheri Berger area ─ a boundary area between Lagos and Ogun states.

The police said the suspects, who had confessed to the crime, made use of four locally-made guns, two of which had reportedly been recovered.
Our correspondent learnt that Musiliu was first arrested by the police before he led detectives to apprehend the others.
The police added, however, that the gang had other members who were still at large.

During interrogation, the suspects were said to have confessed to have organised robberies during which many vehicles were stolen, including a Toyota Highlander, a Toyota Camry and a Toyota Sienna.

Lagos Is Not In Bondage, Go Visit Chibok & See Bondage ─ Fashola replies Jonathan

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has reacted to President Goodluck Jonathan’s statement that a vote for PDP in the forthcoming elections would free Lagos residents from oppression and bondage.

The governor while reacting to the Presidents statement said “It is an un-presidential statement made in an act of desperation. Lagos is not in bondage.”

According to Fashola, “The question to ask him (Jonathan) is that if he had come to free residents of Lagos from bondage and he lived here for five days meeting with people and distributing money in dollars. That means he lived in bondage in five days while trying to free people.

“If he can live here (Lagos) for five days moving with patrol vehicles that we paid for, let him go and spend five days in Chibok and he will know what bondage is.”

It will be recalled that Jonathan made the statement during a meeting with Lagos market women last week.

Fake Customs officer nabbed after duping victims in acution sales (Photo)

The police in Lagos have arrested a fake Deputy Superintendent of Customs, Ramoni Raji, who along with two others allegedly duped their victims of not less than N5m in auction sales.

Punch Metro learnt that Raji, with the other suspects ─ Usman Ibrahim and Adekunle Thomas ─ was apprehended on Tuesday, February 17, in the Gowon Estate area of Lagos. They were arrested by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

Our correspondent gathered that while Raji disguised as a DSC, Thomas pretended to be Raji’s driver, while Ibrahim was in charge of giving out bank account for victims to pay.

It was gathered that Raji told victims that he was in charge of auctioning vehicles and some goods in containers.The police explained that the three allegedly usually took their victims to the Wharf, Apapa area to show them the goods and vehicles.

Our correspondent learnt that a victim, identified simply as Mrs. Uche, was duped of N1.8m when she opted to buy an auctioned Toyota Highlander and paid the sum into an account supplied by the suspects.
